Hundreds gather for the Belleville Labor Day Parade

The annual Labor Day parade took on a solemn tone in Belleville as a 7,100 pound piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Center made its way through the streets of downtown.
It will be the centerpiece of the September 11th, Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois. The goal of the monument is to bear solemn witness to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and and remember the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks, including first responders who risked their lives to help save thousands of people.
Authorities hope this memorial will help tell the story of what happened that day, including the timeline of events at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and Flight 93.
It will be on permanent display as part of a September 11th Memorial Walkway at the Belleville Fire Department Administration Office located at Illinois Rte 159 and Illinois Rte. 115.
